Visitor Signage

ECCM is involved with many projects to enhance the city centre for visitors, residents and businesses, one of which is the Visitor Signage Project.

As outlined in Inspiring Action: The Edinburgh City Centre Action Plan 2005-2010, ECCM are committed to facilitating an effective means of access to and around the city centre.

ECCM and its partners, City of Edinburgh Council, Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh and Lothian and VisitScotland, have developed a signage strategy. This aims to facilitate access to visitor attractions and safe & secure parking facilities in the city centre to enhance the visitor experience within the World Heritage Site.

The first phase of the project looked at three aspects of visitor signage:

1.City boundary signs
2.Visitor attraction signage
3.Car park directional signage

The next phase of the project was to develop detailed designs for visitor information points (VIPs). This looked at the content of these information points and determined suitable locations at key arrival points to the city centre, e.g. car parks, rail and bus stations. The VIPs are due to be installed by the end of May and will be located at the main city centre car parks, the bus station and Waverley Station.

These signs will have 2 levels of mapping, the first covering the immediate area around the location and the second covering the city centre. The signs will carry some information on the immediate location as well as identifying areas of interest for all types of city centre visitor.

Additionally a review of the existing Navigator Signage System has been completed. This looked at their design and information content, their locations and usefulness as well as their maintenance requirements.

The review recommended a redesign of the information panel and the relocation of some units, which is due to be completed by the end of June. The redesign of the panel has omitted the schematic map enabling information on the immediate area to be included.
